Congratulations to the Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation on the recent grant of $3.6M from ShareGift Australia.

ShareGift Australia recently distributed $3.6M to the Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation (LAF). The grant arose from a generous donation of shares to ShareGift Australia. The funds are destined to support a variety of research, particularly that being undertaken by Professor Ralph Martins.

Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation

The Lions Alzheimer’s Foundation (LAF) was launched in Perth, WA in 2016 after more than 10 years of fundraising from Lions clubs throughout Australia.

In the last ten years, Lions members in WA have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding for equipment and Alzheimer’s research.

Members go out into the community to raise funds through various activities.

Professor Ralph Martins’ Research

Professor Ralph Martins, Foundation Chair in Aging and Alzheimer’s Disease at Edith Cowan University, was appointed the Director of the Centre. Professor Martins graduated from University of Western Australia with a PhD in 1986. In 1987 he won a scholarship to Heidelberg University to work with Konrad Beyreuther. His collaborative seminal research involved isolating and characterising beta-amyloid and its precursor, the amyloid precursor protein (APP), which are now recognized as central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease.

He was the first to propose and demonstrate that the Alzheimer brain was under oxidative stress, which is now widely recognized by the Alzheimer research community. In 1989 he joined Professor Masters at Melbourne University where he was the first to isolate and characterize the molecular components of the neuropathological hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease. Professor Martins’ current research interests are focused on understanding the mechanisms and factor(s) leading to the abnormal release and deposition of βA4 in Alzheimer’s disease.

ShareGift Australia grant’s LAF $3.6M

Typically, all share proceeds donated to ShareGift Australia are aggregated at year end, and distributed to eligible charities at the discretion of our board of directors (taking into consideration charitable recommendations received from participating shareholders and ASX listed companies).

In cases where a share sale donation exceeds AUD$500, shareholders may nominate a recipient charity. The grant received by LAF arose from a generous donation of shares to ShareGift Australia. For more information, visit our Distribution Policy.
